Suncorp continues to be hit by natural disasters, with its insurance costs for the financial year currently $253 million above its expectations.The Queensland-based financial company said its natural hazard costs for the 10 months to April 30 totalled $714 million, above its $461 million allowances.The Christmas Day hailstorm in Melbourne was the largest single event in the period with claims of $250 million, and floods and storms in Queensland, NSW and Victoria since the new year have compounded insurance costs.Floods in south-west Queensland and northern NSW in February generated $76 million in insurance claims to Suncorp, and NSW and Victoria floods in March cost the company $41 million.Storms and floods on the north and central coast of Queensland in March generated $37 million in insurance claims, Suncorp said.Those events come after what the company described as its worst year for natural disasters in calendar 2011.For the six months to December 31, Suncorp’s general insurance business posted a 44.5 per cent fall in earnings, to $162 million.Suncorp said on Tuesday the business’ underlying performance had improved ahead of expectations, partly due to rising insurance premiums.The company also provided an update on the performance of its core banking operations, which registered a 3.0 per cent rise in lending in the three months to March 31 to $42 billion.The modest growth reflects the trend of consumers paying off debts at a faster rate than required, Suncorp Bank chief executive David Foster said.”This trend is weighing on the overall banking system but Suncorp Bank continues to grow as consumers look for alternatives to the major banks,” he said in a statement.Suncorp shares were down one cent at $8.27 at 1154 AEST.

Home > News Insurance company drops Swampscott By Cyrus Moulton / The Daily Item SWAMPSCOTT The town is being dropped by its insurance company because of excessive claims and is searching for a new carrier beginning July 1, Town Accountant Dave Castellarin said last week.“We go through one insurance carrier that farms [the insurance] out and our main carrier is not renewing so we’re searching around,” Castellarin said Friday.Castellarin said the town was informed in an e-mail from its insurance agent that Trident Insurance Services would not renew the town’s policy as of July 1 and would send a formal letter indicating this sometime this month. Insurance agent Peter Cook of LifePlus Insurance Agency, Inc., said the non-renewal was due to an “extreme loss ratio” for the town, according to Castellarin.
